types of wood

There are a lot of different firewood types, but the four most popular that we supply include the slow burning gum, the mid burning Macrocarpa to the faster burning pine.
GUM

Gum is a high density wood which is ideal once your fire has been going for a while. It is great for night time burning and keeps your fire going longer while maintaining a warm temperature throughout the night.

Macrocarpa

Is a medium density wood with a good heat output and medium to long burning time. It is a very clean burning wood but however it can spark, so is not suited to some open fires.

OLD PINE

Is normal radiata pine that is older than 50 years. Because of this the tree generates more sap and resin inside the middle of the tree (heartwood) which makes it burn hotter and longer.

PLANTATION PINE

Matures at 25-35 years of age at which time it is harvested. Pine is great to start your fire with, but being a low density wood it doesn't last as long as others. We recommend mixing this with other wood types to make it more efficient.

Central Firewood have Certified measures on our vehicles. This means we have been approved and certified by Consumer Affairs to hold a stated volume of 3.6 cubic metre's (1 cord). When one of our truck's is fully loaded it can carry 7.2 cubic metre's (2 cords). This ensures that you will always receive the amount ordered.

Please note: Firewood sold by volume is sold as a 'thrown measure' This means that the quantity of wood is measured as if it were thrown into a container, and not as if it were stacked.
